Plot Summary

In Athens, on the eve of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding, Egeus brings a complaint to Theseus regarding his daughter, Hermia, who has fallen in love with Lysander. Egeus has decided that Hermia must marry Demetrius, and declares that if she refuses, she will either be put to death or sent to a nunnery. Hermia and Lysander decide to steal away from Athens that night, and flee through the forest to a place where they can safely wed. In the meantime, they run into Hermia’s friend Helena, who is in love with Demetrius. In a desperate bid to win Demetrius’ love, Helena tells him of Hermia and Lysander’s plans, and he follows them into the forest to fight for his claim to Hermia. In a different part of the forest, a misfit crew of Athenian workers are rehearsing a play for the Duke and new Duchess’s wedding. The plots intertwine as both sets of Athenian mortals become caught up in the domestic disputes of Oberon and Titania, the king and queen of the fairies. In a series of miscommunications and misused magic, each of the characters undergoes the strangest, and most transformative, night of their lives.
